Bassoonist Meridith Wright is an educator, reed maker, and freelance musician based in San Antonio, Texas. She oversees a thriving private studio, where she instructs bassoon students of all levels, from beginners to advanced high school musicians.
A native of Houston, Texas, Meridith began her bassoon studies in the sixth grade and quickly developed a deep passion for the instrument. Her early experiences with the Houston Youth Symphony sparked a lifelong interest in orchestral performance and chamber music. Meridith initially studied under Cheryl Huddleston at the University of Houston and graduated from the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston.
She was awarded the prestigious Barbara and David Jacobs full-tuition scholarship to attend Indiana University, where she earned her Bachelor of Music degree under the tutelage of Kathleen McLean. Meridith continued her academic and musical pursuits at the University of Texas at Austin, completing a Master of Music degree in performance under the direction of Kristin Wolfe Jensen. Meridith’s teaching philosophy centers on fostering a deep understanding of music through personalized instruction, encouraging technical proficiency, artistic expression, and a lifelong passion for the bassoon in each of her students.
Meridith is the principal bassoonist of Symphony Viva of San Antonio and second bassoonist with the San Antonio Harmonie ensemble. She has performed with the San Antonio Philharmonic, Round Rock Symphony, Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra and performs frequently with the Mid Texas Symphony.
Beyond teaching, reed making, and performing, Meridith is an avid outdoor enthusiast who enjoys every opportunity to connect with nature. In 2022, she completed the entire 2,194-mile Appalachian Trail in a single thru-hike. Additionally, she has paddled 100 miles along the Rio Grande River through Big Bend National Park and has successfully competed in the Texas 200 small craft sailboat race four times.
