Registration & Lessons

Thank you for your interest in private lessons! The benefits of private instruction go far, and are essential in setting up students to achieve their personal best. It is my objective to help every student enjoy music and playing the bassoon. Through the individual attention they will receive through private lessons, I hope to help each student set and achieve their own personal goals and help set them up to succeed by introducing proper habits and fundamentals. Each week I typically assign a warm up, fundamental exercises, an etude and include what the student is currently working on in class such as band repertoire, solos, region band music and more. Bassoon is a complicated, but rewarding instrument and unfortunately most of the time the attention students receive in band class is not sufficient to properly learn the instrument. Here's a list of the best reasons private instruction will help you have a positive and enriching experience playing the bassoon (or any instrument!).

10 reasons why private lessons will benefit you:

1.    You will have access to knowledge and input from a specialist in your instrument! Bassoon is a complicated but rewarding instrument and without special attention it is easy for bad habits to form, or for bad habits to hold back your playing if you've already been playing for a while.  A private teacher can help you make small corrections to improve your playing and overall experience with the instrument.

2.     Private lessons will set you up for success. When you're playing the instrument correctly and have access to coaching from a professional, you put yourself in a position to reach your goals.

3.   Private lessons help to minimize frustration. Like I've said before, the bassoon is a complicated instrument! Coaching from a private teacher will give you the chance to learn at your own pace and reach a better level of understanding than you would in a group setting.

4.  You'll be able to pursue your personal interests and have access to a variety of interesting music and exercises that will help you become better at bassoon. In a group setting, there is a specific curriculum the director must teach to the whole class, but in lessons you can pick songs that you want to play and you'll learn exercises to help you become better on your instrument.

5.     Working with a private teacher will help you keep up in a group setting! While it may be easy to blend in and cover up mistakes in class, you will be held to a higher level of accountability in private lessons. Private lessons will help you prepare to do well in class and play your own part with confidence.

6.   You will learn how to practice effectively. Your teacher will not only help you improve during lessons, but give you tools and a specific plan for reaching goals outside of lessons.

7.   You will have a role model to listen to and watch! It can be difficult to fully understand how to play an instrument if you do not get to see the instrument played and hear what it sounds like. Your teacher will often play their own instrument in your lesson and as a result you will be able to develop a better tone and understanding of how to play.

8. Encouragement! In a group setting, you may not often receive compliments when you do something right, or feedback on your in- class performance. In private lessons you will receive immediate feedback on your progress and plenty of encouragement for positive habits.

9. Studying with a private teacher can help you stay motivated over time.

10. Confidence! With the support, encouragement and access to information your private lesson teacher can give you, you'll have all the tools you need to achieve any goal you have for yourself.
